This group of metals is characterised by their distinctive applications in the electronic industry. Therefore, application of electronic components in the capital goods industry and in the consumer goods industry is a key driver of demand. However, applications are also found in the glass industry, the pharmaceutical industry etc..

Cadmium and tellurium, for instance, are applied as cadmium telluride in thin film solar cells. Gallium as a further example, is used for LEDs, laser diodes, solar cells, high-performance transistors, large capacity memory chips etc.. Apart from its usage within the electronic industry, germanium is employed in the production of infrared optics, pharmaceuticals, and in petrochemistry. Indium is applied in electronic semi-conductors, and is an ingredient of galvanic coatings and of ferromagnetic components. Indium is also used for CIGS thin film solar cells which are composed of copper, selenium, and gallium as well.
