This group comprises of elements that give steel special qualities when added. Therefore, they are of high importance, in particular, for high-tech industries. In general, metals of this group are characterised by easy alloying, and final products stand out due to high corrosion resistance and good ductility.

Accordingly steel refining metals are found in non-corroding steels, construction steels, tool steels, high-speed alloy steels, high temperature alloys, superalloys, magnetic steels, special stainless steels etc.. In addition, for instance, molybdenum is used in contact plates, electrodes, nozzles, heating units, and heat shields. Manganese is applied in tools, springs, and valves. Niobium is employed in electrolytic capacitors. Tungsten, as a last example, serves as spiral-wound filament in lamps, as a component in radiation shields, or for flyweights and excenter tappets.
